The Overlooked Muscle Causing Your Headaches in Overland Park

Do you feel a full pain over your eyes, around your temples, or at the top of your neck? You very likely may be experiencing a “tension-type” headache. In fact, 80% of Americans deal with headaches every so often. An unlucky 3% have a daily tension headache. We see these headaches every day at our Overland Park chiropractic office and we know how to ease your headaches. You may even have symptoms like difficulty sleeping or fatigue from the headaches. Some patients with tension headaches also deal with TMJ issues. Let’s take action today to fix your headaches and learn about the most common muscle that is causing them!

What Muscles Can Causes Headaches in overland park

If there is one muscle to focus on it is the occipitofrontalis muscle. It is aptly named based on which parts of the skull it attaches to: your occiput (where the back of your head meets the neck), and the frontal bone (it attaches over your eyebrows and nose). When one part of this muscle gets tight it will pull on the other parts.

This is why tightness at the top of your neck can also cause pain over the eyebrows or strain on your eyes. This tightness is what makes the tension we feel with tension headaches. Other muscles can also be tight and cause headaches, but the occipitofrontalis is almost always a culprit with tension headaches.

Obviously one of the easiest solutions is to take the tension out the muscle. Our favorite technique to fix headaches at our chiropractic office and make them go away is to use the chiropractic adjustment.

Headaches respond very well to this technique because it gets to the source of why these muscles keep getting tight. When our vertebra are restricted or under stress, the muscles will tighten (tension) to protect the joint. Most people with tension headaches also report neck pain for a good reason - the two are very intertwined! If you get neck tension or pain and deal with headaches, consider seeing a chiropractor for the best results.

Treatments for headaches

Ice: Ice is a very simple treatment, and also very effective. Place an ice pack at the base of your head for 10 minutes to reduce inflammation in the occipital muscles. You may also consider ice on the frontalis muscle located right over the eyebrows. Ice has an anti-inflammatory effect on sore and overused muscles. While this won’t fix what is causing the headaches, it will give you some relief. Ice can be repeated every 20 minutes as needed.

Trigger Points for Headaches: At home, you can try trigger points to help relieve the muscle tension. Here are the main two areas to self-massage. For the occipital part of the muscle, take your thumbs to the back of your head right above where it meets your neck. You may feel the two bony protrusions, or condyles, of the occiput bone to know you are in the right area. Press around this area until you feel the tender soft spots.

There may be multiple and all of these can use attention. Use small deep pressure circles with your thumbs to loosen the trigger points. For the frontalis muscle, use the pads of your fingers right above your eyebrows. You will feel a lot of tender spots the whole width of the eyebrow. For an extra effect, there is a great acupuncture point on the underside of your eyebrow ridge where the eyebrow meets the nose. You’ll feel a really tender spot if it needs attention.

These trigger points will help relax the muscle and relieve your tension headache. For a permanent fix, talk with your chiropractor about other causes for your headaches. At our Overland Park chiropractic office, we commonly see the upper vertebra of the spine as the main cause of tension headaches. A thorough evaluation will get the answers you need. We serve the greater Kansas City area with fantastic results for headaches.
